OUR INTENT for the ART curriculum at St Joseph's is that:
children acquire skills through substantive knowledge, both practically and theoretically, in their art lessons. This will positively impact on their creativity throughout their lives. We want children to enjoy expressing their ideas in their own unique style, critically analyse art from other cultures and the work of artists and understand how art has reflected and shaped our history. Children are taught the paradigms of art through debate and discussion about both traditional and modern forms of art.
ART DISPLAYED AROUND OUR SCHOOL
At St. Joseph’s we believe that all children should experience the joy of an art education grounded in creativity and wonder. They will become fluent in skills that will enable them to produce Art work to the best of their ability. We have a skills progression in each area of art where art skills are broken down into their component parts and built upon throughout the topics.
The Scheme of Work has the National Curriculum as its basis and has ambition for all firmly rooted in it. The Scheme of Work is reviewed regularly and is sequential, with clear prior knowledge/skills identified. Key vocabulary is emphasised to enhance children’s learning and understanding in art and there are clear and ambitious end goals. Art is linked to other subjects when appropriate to further enhance children’s learning.
We ensure that children have the ability to access all areas of the art curriculum and are given opportunities to progress and reinforce their skills on a regular basis, by repetition, over-learning and modelling of key skills. We place a strong emphasis on sketching and painting with other areas such as collage, textiles and sculpture being interspersed throughout the year. Their Art books are used to help them understand the skills they have learnt and how they can use these in the art work they create. They are given time to reflect on their work and therefore inform themselves on how they will add and change their work next time.
The Art curriculum is reinforced by memorable experiences, for example the creation of display work and competition work. The teaching of art is very strong throughout the school as evidenced by the quality of art work on display.
In Early Years by following the EYFS curriculum and focusing on Expressive Art and Design, children are provided with regular opportunities to engage with the arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. The quality and variety of what children see, hear and participate in is crucial for developing their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts. The frequency, repetition and depth of their experiences are fundamental to their progress.
In Early Years, children are taught in their class or in small groups in their own art room.
At Key Stage 1, children are taught in their classroom by their class teacher supported by the specialist teacher.
Key Stage 2 a specialist teacher, Mrs Lawrence, is employed to give Art lessons to all classes in a purpose-built designated Art room.

Year 2 Art - Junk Modelling
The children in Year 2 had a wonderful time designing and creating their own junk models. They worked hard creating animals and produced great work which they were excited to share with their families.
